Watchtowers make mobile wallets more powerful (or wallets that are not online 24x7). They keep track of channels for the client.

There is a nice podcast with Conner Fromknecht about it: https://stephanlivera.com/episode/83

Workings
At a high level, the lookout service receives input via two sources: block events and it's database. Incoming state updates are continually written to the database, and are made available to the lookout as soon as the tower successfully persists the encrypted blob. As new blocks come in, the tower searches for any breach hints matching the txid prefixes contained in the newly found block. If any matches are generated from the query, the lookout service will dispatch an attempt to decrypt and sweep the transaction on behalf of the user.

Lookout part
Handles the responsibility of monitoring the chain for possible breaches and responding by decrypting and broadcasting any justice transactions that its clients had previously uploaded.

Watchtower / server , standalone
Receives and stores encrypted blobs from clients, this represents that second primary service enabling the tower to act on behalf of the tower's clients.

Fees
Watchtowers have a "sweep fee". The way watchtowers work is that you give them an encrypted Bitcoin justice transaction getting your funds back in the case of a breach. When they see that evil thieving transaction on the chain, that transaction reveals the decryption key and they decrypt and broadcast the transaction.

LND
LND had watchtowers since 0.7.

Status
* breach monitoring
* Merged on 2019-01-16 : https://github.com/lightningnetwork/lnd/pull/2448 (This PR does not expose the watchtower configuration options in LND's config, it only adds the struct that will later be embedded. Further, the configuration options are only available in experimental builds as there are few moving parts of the protocol that should be solidified before attempting to operate a tower.)
The Lightning Network Daemon (lnd) - is a complete implementation of a Lightning Network node. lnd has several pluggable back-end chain services including btcd (a full-node), bitcoind, and neutrino (a new experimental light client). The project's codebase uses the btcsuite set of Bitcoin libraries, and also exports a large set of isolated re-usable Lightning Network related libraries within it.

lnd fully conforms to the Lightning Network specification (BOLTs). BOLT stands for: Basis of Lightning Technology. The specifications are currently being drafted by several groups of implementers based around the world including the developers of lnd. The set of specification documents as well as our implementation of the specification are still a work-in-progress.

Functionality of wallets
Please add more details to wallet functionality.
Wallets are considered Layer-3 applications. Wallets use the Lightning Network (a Layer-2 protocol) which is a payment protocol to provide wallet functionality.

Non-custodial wallets create, manage and use private Layer-1 keys that hold funds. Such private keys are for example Bitcoin or Litecoin keys, corresponding to the Layer-1 blockchain.

Custodial wallets are usually thin mobile apps that connect to web sites operating custodial wallets.

Lightning wallets connect to Lightning nodes as well as to Layer-1 blockchain nodes, such as Bitcoin nodes.

Features
Wallet features might include:
* creating and closing a Lightning payment channel
* sending and receiving of Lightning payments
* refilling funds, funds pop-up
* punishing fraudulent payment publication
* integration with or connectivity to Watchtowers
* connectivity to Lightning exchanges
* atomic swaps

Dangers and Risks
Be aware of and understand the difference between full and thin wallets. The differences between custodial and non-custodial wallets. The differences between open source and closed source wallets. Wallets can steal all all your funds. Do not use a wallet you do not trust. Always research a wallet (e.g. on the internet) before you install and use a wallet. Only use a wallet you trust.

Wallets can have access to, hold, and manage the private keys of your funds. Wallets can misuse these keys to fraudulently steal funds from you if you are not careful. See fraud to learn about how to avoid fraud.

Best practices
* Build knowledge: Learn about Lightning.
* Build trust: Research a wallet to build trust before downloading it, installing it or using it.
* Start with small funds: Start with small funds to improve your knowledge and the trust in your wallet.
* Backup: Frequently backup your wallet. This is specific to your wallet, so check with your Lightning wallet provider.
* Use a Watchtower: Use a Watchtower to be vigilant on your behalf about your Lightning payment transactions
* Open the wallet regularly: This is specific to your wallet, so check with your Lightning wallet provider. Good wallets are vigilant and supervise your payment transactions and thereby can detect and also correct fraudulent payment transactions. You might have to open your wallet for this to happen.

List of Lightning wallets
Disclaimer: lightningwiki.net does not recommend any wallet(s) and is not responsible for the action(s) of any wallets. The use of any wallet is 100% at your risk. It is fully your responsibility. See dangers and risks.

* refilling funds, funds pop-up
* punishing fraudulent payment publication
* integration with or connectivity to Watchtowers
* connectivity to Lightning exchanges
* atomic swaps

The channel reserve is specified by the peer's channel_reserve_satoshis: 1% of the channel total is suggested. Each side of a channel maintains this reserve so it always has something to lose if it were to try to broadcast an old, revoked commitment transaction. Initially, this reserve may not be met, as only one side has funds; but the protocol ensures that there is always progress toward meeting this reserve, and once met, it is maintained.

The Lightning Network has the capability to send amounts smaller than the smallest unit on the Layer-1 blockchain. The smallest unit on Bitcoin is 1 satoshi but the Lightning Network can handle millisatoshis with 1000 millisatoshis being 1 satoshi.

Millisatoshis is abbreviate as msat.

The amount is rounded down to the nearest satoshi when the channel is closed and broadcast to the blockchain to adhere to bitcoins specification.

A millisatoshi is exactly 0.00000000001 BTC. Or 100 billion millisatoshis are 1 BTC.
